OCZ Vendetta2 review

Almost a year ago OCZ released its revolutionary OCZ Vendetta, which compensated for its smaller size with an innovative heatpipe design called HDT (Heatpipe Direct Contact). Today we are reviewing the second revision of the cooler, that doesn’t replace the original Vendetta, but is a larger version aimed at an even higher segment.

The Vendetta cooler caused quite a stir on the market with performance on the level of 120 mm and the price of 92 mm models. The Vendetta2 is just an upgrade; the design is almost completely the same. The more fin surface you have the more heat dissipation you have. Since the original Vendetta was almost at the level of
some other 120 mm heatsinks, we expected the Vendetta2 to perform on the top of the segment.

Like all OCZ packaging, Vendetta2 comes encased in a foam coating that provides protection for the densely packed fins. The fan is packed separately, so the user has to assemble the cooler itself. Some coolers on the market have an easier assembly and installation, but we will not take that fact as a minus since most users going for such high performance cooler will have enough skill to assemble it properly. Available sockets for installation are AMD’s 754, 939 and AM2 and Intel’s LGA775. Both use the stock connection method so no backplate is required, which means that the heatsink can be installed on the motherboard already installed in the system case.

The cooler is made of a combination of aluminum and copper. The cooler has no base, since the three heatpipes are in direct contact with the metal plate on the CPU, just like on the first Vendetta that proved to be an excellent heat transfer method. They connect to the aluminum fins just like any other heatpipe cooler.
The user has to install the fan itself, using the provided rubber extensions. They fit into the fan’s holes on one side and on the holes in the fins on the other. They also provide vibration free case since the rubber dampens the vibrations made by the fan. The other positive side is that although this fan is almost silent, you can always go for some other model that has different fin design, color glow or higher speed.
